Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary

The history of the community of the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary begins with the founding of the international Schoenstatt Movement in 1914, when Father Joseph Kentenich (1885-1968) worked as an educator among young people. Their meeting place was an old St. Michael's Chapel in Schoenstatt near Vallendar, Germany. Father Kentenich and the boys sealed a "Covenant of Love" with Mary on October 18, 1914.

What began in 1914 continues to work in the people who unite themselves with Mary and entrust themselves to her. Today the international Schoenstatt Movement consists of more than 20 independent communities and groups, including 6 secular institutes. The Secular Institute of the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary was founded in 1926 and since 1948 the community has been an institute of pontifical right. Today we work on all continents, in 29 countries, the sisters come from 42 nations. Our community has been in House Schoenstatt in Brig since 2004.

The name "Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary" refers to the Schoenstatt Shrine, the place where our founder, Fr. Joseph Kentenich, sealed the "Covenant of Love" with Mary in 1914. Schoenstatt's spirituality is essentially characterized by faith in God's guidance in everyday life. The "Covenant of Love" with Mary is the source of life and the center of spirituality.
